Ms Florence, who has been working in Thailand for more than 10 years, was arrested at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok on May 5 over charges of criminal defamation.
The 50-year-old faces the prospect of a 12 month prison sentence. But she isn't the first Australian national to have such a heavy sentence hanging over their head.
Having undergone a similar ordeal in the country, Brisbane businessman Neil Herdegen said criminal defamation charges were commonly used as a scare tactic against business rivals in Thailand.
The charges against Ms Florence were brought by Malaysian businessman Ronald Wai Choi Ng, the former managing director of Tongkah Harbour.

Dear Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,
I heartily welcome you to Siam. You may or may not know that your August father was here before the Independence of Burma to form the League of SE Asian nations, by the invitation of our late Senior Statesman, Pridi Banomyung.
Most tragically your father was assassinated. Although Mr. Pridi was not killed physically, the powers that be in this country destroyed his reputation thoroughly and killed most of his colleagues who stood for democracy and dhammic socialism.
I hope you and I will have a chance to meet and talk seriously about dhammic socialism in our two countries.

One of the outcomes of these upheavals has been the growing number of Malays who realise that their welfare and happiness are not a function of protecting Malay institutions. In fact, an increasing number of young and educated Malays are arguing the opposite: that calls to protect Malay institutions are nothing more than a ploy to protect the current ruling elites.
If the state of the monarchy in Thailand is anything to go by, Malaysia’s Malay monarchs, if they are not careful, could be facing the same predicament. As an aside, a cursory scan of the web provides ample evidence of the Johor royal families extensive car collection.
