The US State department releases its annual Trafficking in Persons report Friday. Thailand, Malaysia, Columbia, Cyprus and Qatar are downgraded after revelations of appalling maltreatment of workers that amount to modern-day slavery, while Afghanistan and Sudan improved their rating
THAILAND
Slavery in its fishing sector, poor safeguards for migrant workers and exploitation in its ever-growing sex industry have led Thailand to rank as one of the worst offenders in this year's report. Failure to enact an anti-trafficking plan two years in a row has resulted in it being downgraded to a tier 3 country. Thai civilians and military officials have been accused of complicity in trafficking Burma's Rohingya people. Thailand is a major US trading partner and enjoys a strong relationship with Washington.
