    More than 24 million viewers watched the royal wedding on the BBC and ITV, with BBC coverage of the ceremony seen by 18.7m, early figures suggest.

        The BBC said a peak figure of 20m - a 70% share - tuned into the corporation's coverage at the end of the service in Westminster Abbey.

        More than 34 million viewers watched at least part of the BBC's TV royal wedding coverage, it added. These figures include live iPlayer viewings.

        The estimated figures for the BBC and ITV put the wedding in the all-time top 10 most-watched programmes, although more people watched the 1966 World Cup Final (32.3m) and Princess Diana's funeral in 1997 (32.1m).

        The wedding between the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 attracted 28.4m viewers.

        Those watching the other terrestrial channels on Friday - BBC Two, Channel 4 and Five - made up only 1% of the television audience as the wedding service began.

        Sky News said it had a peak of 661,000 viewers at 1100GMT, the start of the wedding ceremony, with about one million people using its website.

        No official figures for the wedding's costs have been released. But palace officials did recently tell reporters that the total bill for the nuptials will be in the six figures.

        The final wedding bill won't be as expensive as people think, the palace stressed, because the monarchy already employs many of the people involved in the wedding, such as caterers and chefs for the champagne reception.

        The wedding is not a state occasion - unlike, say, a coronation. That means the royal family, with input from the Middletons who made their millions with a party supplies company, is paying for most items on the wedding checklist: the flowers, the carriage procession, the dresses, the service, and the reception.

        Renting Westminster Abbey was free of charge, so a big chunk of the expenses will go to entertainment

        Taxpayers will be picking up the tab for the massive security operation, which included deploying 5000 police officers. Those security costs are estimated to come to at least STG6.61 million ($A10.08 million).
