Two great vocalists in the spotlight this week, first, the hippest of hip jazz divas Anita O’Day, who is the subject of a recent issue on the Fresh Sound label (FSR CD 584) This contains 21 tracks she cut between 1955 and 1959 with various groups of West Coasters, in settings provided by arrangers Buddy Bregman and Jimmy Giuffre. “Hot & Cool Heat” is the title and this nicely expresses the programme which ranges from straight-ahead treatments of, eg Porter’s “You’re The Top” (complete with a chorus of non-Porter jazz-based lyrics!) to flute and bass clarinet dominated performances of such songs as ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’. Much pleasure in spotting Jim Hall’s guitar, Art Pepper’s alto.

Marlene VerPlanck left these shores just the other day, leaving us some warm musical memories and a memento in the shape of a new CD “One Dream At A Time” (Audiophile ACD 340). Her gorgeous voice seems to get better and better and this programme is perfectly poised with swingers (‘Haven’t We Met’ ‘You Can Depend On Me’, ‘What A Difference A Day Made’) leavened with reflective pieces, some, like ‘Quietly’ and the title-song, by her late husband, Billy, great show-tunes (Lerner & Loewe’s “The Heather On The Hill”, and forgotten gems (‘There’s No Holding Me’ by Ira Gershwin & Arthur Schwartz). Backings are provided by 3 different piano/organ trios, all of them excellent. We have, we believe, all of Marlene’s CDs and this just may be the best yet: It certainly keeps finding its way back to our player!

Tony Blackburn returns for another special bank holiday chart and this time counts down the 30 biggest selling songs from the movies, of all time.

Expect music from across seven decades and a couple of films to crop up more than once during the show.
Using sales data provided by The Official Charts Company, a track is only eligible for this chart if it was recorded specifically for a film. Previously released songs later included on film soundtracks have not been included.

Radio 2 Arts Show presenter, Claudia Winkleman will also pop up during the countdown to provide a bit of background on a few of the films.
The chart is based on physical and download sales, up to and including 27th February 2011.

          I live in Tuscaloosa.
This is an area of Tuscaloosa known as Alberta City. I worked the area on Thursday, repairing some cleanup equipment. There are churches, a fire station, a police precinct, and countless homes and businesses literally mauled to the ground. But, that's insignificant next to the human factor. Alberta City is home to families with relatively low incomes; people who don't have a whole lot. I saw families, Americans sitting on a curb with what little they had left, maybe a blanket or a small bag of clothes. They had nowhere to go. The sight was truly heartbreaking. My brother volunteered his chainsaw a few blocks away, and he assisted in recovering several bodies of the ones who didn't survive.
If you are blessed with the resources, please donate to organizations who offer assistance. If your resources are limited, please offer your prayers. God bless.

        • Kanj Love ジャスミン AFP - It was World Tai Chi day on Saturday, and in old Havana's San Francisco Plaza, more than 200 brightly attired Cubans of all ages showed off their skill in the ancient martial art-turned exercise.

Dressed in white, green, blue, red, yellow and black, Cubans practiced the slow and steady movements of the ancient Chinese art form.

There are more than 5,000 Tai Chi practitioners in Cuba, as well as a Cuban School of Wushu, located in Havana's Chinatown district, said the school's director, Roberto Vargas Li.

After the school was established in 1995, said Li, Tai Chi spread rapidly throughout the country.

Li said there are some 200 older Cubans who have reached a high level of Tai Chi mastery, and often act as instructors.

More than 70 countries were expected to take part in World Tai Chi day, according to the official Tai Chi website, with tens of thousands of participants.
