Songkran embodies traditional Thai cultural values. The underlying significance of Songkran is the process of cleansing and purification starting the New Year afresh with all that is good and pure. Enjoy Bangkok Songkran Festival on April 11, 2012 - April 16, 2012.www.Songkran.net

Songkran or Thai New Years is celebrated in mid April. April 13-15 are public holidays but festivities can run from the 13th to 22nd depending on the traditions of each area. Today is the first day and we went to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha or Wat Pho. Here, there will be traditional performances, a temple fair and prayer ceremonies.
Thais often make merit to welcome the new year, may it be the international January 1st one or Songkran. However, Songkran is special because aside from the religious aspect, we also have water splashing festivities. Since April is the hottest month of the year, the splash of water is very welcomed. Just make sure to keep the phones in zip lock bags ;)

Songkran Day, which occurs on April 13th, marks the New Year on the ancient Thai calendar. At this time of the year, Thai people visit temples to offer food to the monks and to participate in bathing ceremonies of Buddha statues. At home, young people pour scented water onto the hands of their parents and elders as a mark of respect. In return, they receive the blessings of the elderly. Songkran is also a time to reunite with family members.
