JAKARTA – ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the United States have indeed established ties for a long time. To mark the long ties, a panel discussion was held in Jakarta today.
In conjunction with the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-US relations, the Habibie Center and the US diplomatic mission for ASEAN Affairs, hosted a panel discussion with the theme: "ASEAN-US Relations: What are the Talking Points?”
The panel discussion, which was attended by US Ambassador for ASEAN Affairs David L. Carden, former ASEAN Secretary General Rodolfo C. Severino, and (Indonesian political scientist) Dewi Fortuna Anwar, was held at the US Cultural Center at the Pacific Place Mall in Jakarta.
During the event to mark the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-US relations, there was also the launching of a book entitled “ASEAN-US Relations: What are the Talking Points?” written by Dr. Pavin Chachavalpongpun.
The panel discussion was also attended by various quarters, including political maritime expert Hasyim Djalal, members of the diplomatic corps, and a number of students.
Generally speaking, the discussion identified three important issues for ASEAN and the US to map out, namely political cooperation, strategic issues, and bilateral economic and technical cooperation.
