คำว่า "เม็งราย" ถูกประดิษฐ์ขึ้นโดยเจตน์จำนงอย่างแรงกล้า ตามวิเทโศบายการเมืองระหว่างประเทศในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ ที่บีบบังคับให้รัฐสยามจำต้องดำเนินการแก้ไขพระนามของ "พระญามังราย" เสียใหม่ เปลี่ยนเป็น"ชื่ออะไรก็ได้ที่ใกล้เคียงกัน" ด้วยเหตุผลที่ค่อนข้างคอขาดบาดตาย!
เป็นอันว่าชื่อ "มังราย" นั้นถูกต้อง ปัญหาที่ตามมาก็คือ จริงหรือไม่ (ตามที่ฝรั่งว่าไว้) ที่นามของพระองค์มีความเกี่ยวพันกับชาวพม่า และหากตอบปฏิเสธ ไฉนพระองค์จึงมีชื่อว่า "มัง" อันเป็นภาษาของชาวม่าน
จริงอยู่ที่คำว่า "มัง" เป็นคำนำหน้าของคนชั้นสูงในพม่า ระดับกษัตริย์หรือขุนนาง เช่น มังนรธา มังระ มังร่อ มังฉงาย ฯลฯ
"มังราย" เป็นชื่อดั้งเดิมของพระองค์ท่านมาตั้งแต่เกิด
