        The unseasonably warm weather will continue into the weekend with temperatures remaining in the low 20Cs.

        The previous hottest day of the year was on April 6 when 23.5C was recorded in Santon Downham, Suffolk.

        The main damage is caused by the drawing of water for industrial purposes and use by the growing populations of Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The unplanned industrialization and urbanization also has resulted in sewage, waste and poisonous material being spewed back into the river.

        The undermining has continued despite the Yamuna Action Plan, which was launched two decades ago with help from Japan with the aim of restoring the river. Today, nearly 60 % of Delhi’s sewage continues to be dumped into the river rendering the Yamuna little more than a “drain.”

        On a recent visit to Agra, this writer found that the river was a trickle of viscous dark grey in which it would be hard to imagine any aquatic life surviving. The biggest threat is the fact that the river dries up completely at Agra during the summer months.

        The man, an overseas worker, has not been identified due to privacy concerns. He was to be beheaded in 2009 after being convicted of smuggling methamphetamine into the conservative kingdom after Saudi authorities seized a package that was mailed to him containing the illegal drugs.

        As Hindu priests chanted holy verses, Singh’s 12-year old grandson lit the funeral pyre Monday at a solemn ceremony attended by many former rulers of small kingdoms in India.

        The 79-year old Singh became the hereditary ruler of Jaipur in June 1970. Jaipur was one of hundreds of tiny royal kingdoms in India until its independence from Britain in 1947.

        India formally abolished royal titles in 1971, but Singh still was revered in Rajasthan state, of which Jaipur is now the capital.

        Singh had high blood pressure and a lung infection and died late Saturday.

Though the present boundary of Yemen was not always the limitation of the rule, different parts of Yemen had been ruled by different kings. The monarchy in Yemen had been monopolized by Muslim rulers. This had a distinct effect on the culture of the place. The last dynasty to have ruled the country of Yemen, occupied the regions of Shihr and Maklla. They belonged to a branch of the Hamid-ud dynasty.

        However, the powers of the kings of Yemen were limited during the British rule in the region. The British forces had occupied Yemen 1839 and it was only in 1926, that the colonialists recognized Yahya bin Muhammad as the king of Yemen. The rule Yahya Khan was frequently interrupted by revolts, strifes and much bloodshed. Finally, this Yemen king was assassinated in 1948. The tradition of monarchical rule continued even after this until 1967. The last of the kings of Yemen was Nasir bin Abdullah. The Sultans of Yemen from 1887 to 1967 belonged to the Fadhli Sultanate.

        In Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh dismissed the government, perhaps the first step towards forming a national unity government after the violent clashes on Friday that killed at least 52 people. Immediately after the fighting a state ofemergency was proclaimed for a period of 30 days. In protest against the repression, some ministers have given their resignations, followed by two ambassadors.

        Today one of the leading Yemeni army officers, General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, announced he has switched to the side of rebels seeking the removal of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

        Announcing that ''we support and protect young people protesting in University Square in Sanaa'' said the general, who commands the first armoured division. This is the first official of that rank to defect since the protest movement against the regime began last January which has so far caused dozens of deaths. After the announcement around a massive deployment of tanks was reported around the presidential palace.

        MANILA : Philippine authorities said Sunday more people had been evacuated from towns and villages near a volcano island close to the capital amid increasing signs of seismic activity.


        The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the number evacuated had increased to 1,375 as of Saturday from four towns near Taal volcano, while seismologists recorded 10 volcanic earthquakes overnight.

        Water temperatures and gas emissions also increased, seismologists said.

        The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology began detecting activity at Taal -- a popular tourist destination -- early this month and on April 9 raised the alert level to the second of five, indicating a state of moderate volcanic unrest.

        Taal is one of the most unstable of the country's active volcanoes, with 33 eruptions in recorded history, the last in 1977.

    His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said Al-Said
    Sultan Qaboos bin Said was born in Salalah in Dhofar on 18 November 1940. He is the only son of Sultan Said bin Taimur and is of the 8th generation of the Al Busaidi dynasty. He received his primary and secondary education in Salalah and at Pune, in India,and was sent to a private educational establishment in England at age sixteen. At the age of 20, he entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After passing out of Sandhurst, he joined a British Infantry regiment, The Cameronians, and was posted to the 1st Battalion in Germany for one year and also held a staff appointment with the British Army. After his military service, Sultan Qaboos studied local government subjects in England and, after a world tour, returned home to Salalah where he studied Islam and the history of his country. Qaboos acceded to the throne on 23 July 1970, moving to Muscat. There he declared that the country would no longer be known as Muscat and Oman, but would change its name to "the Sultanate of Oman" in order to better reflect its political unity.
