Thailand's Economy Grew 6.7% in Third Quarter From Year Earlier

Thailand’s economy grew at the slowest pace in three quarters as exports eased, justifying the central bank’s decision to refrain from a third straight interest-rate increase last month.

    Kanj Love ジャスミン Gross domestic product rose 6.7 percent in the three months through September from a year earlier, the state planning agency know as the National Economic and Social Development Board said in Bangkok today. That compared with the 7.2 percent median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey of 15 economists. The economy grew a revised 9.2 percent in the second quarter.

    Automakers to develop more fuel-efficient vehicles
    Japanese automakers are likely to step up efforts to improve fuel efficiency, as stricter standards will be applied from April.
    
    
    Automakers measure and disclose fuel efficiency based on government standards, but discrepancies have been reported.
    
    The government will require manufacturers to release figures that reflect actual driving conditions for models to be launched from April.
    
    Under the new rules, companies will be required to test their vehicles at various speeds using engines that have not been warmed up.
    
    When these standards are applied, the fuel efficiency of the Toyota Prius will drop from the current 38 kilometers per liter to 32.6.
    
    In the case of the Honda Insight, the figure will fall by about 10 percent from 30 to 26 kilometers per liter.
    
    Amid growing interest in environmental issues, many consumers want vehicles with higher fuel efficiency.
    
    Automakers are expected to modify their engines and take other steps to improve vehicle performance.

    Toyota to mass produce lithium batteries
    Toyota will start mass production of lithium ion batteries ahead of the planned launch of its plug-in hybrid car by 2012.
    
    
    Lithium ion batteries are used to power next-generation environmentally-friendly cars, such as plug-in hybrid cars and electric vehicles. The battery can be charged from household outlets.
    
    Toyota plans to start selling its plug-in hybrid car by the beginning of 2012, with an annual sales target of 50,000 units. Forecasting large demand for lithium ion batteries, the company has decided to start full-fledged mass production at a battery-making firm in Kosai City in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. The firm is run jointly with Japanese electronics maker Panasonic.
    
    As for next-generation eco-cars, Japanese companies and other car makers have announced plans to start selling electric cars. Toyota will launch its electric car in 2012.
    
    But Toyota believes it will take longer for electric cars to be widely used, as they are high-priced and can travel only a limited distance on one charge. So Toyota plans for the time being to focus on plug-in hybrid cars that can run on gasoline after the battery runs out.
    
    Observers say expansion in eco-car use will depend on how much the battery cost can be cut by. As Toyota itself is to start full-scale mass production of batteries, other automakers will keep a close watch on how much it can lower costs by.
